With regards to the aims of the project, there is the whole SuDS project, and then the smaller part of the project which is the works at the schools. For the entire project, the aim of it is to tackle areas of surface water flooding which have suffered from repeated flood events over the years. To do this we will be utilising green solutions such as rain gardens, swales, tree pits etc. to not only manage the flood risk, but also to maximise all of the wider benefits. These other benefits include, water quality improvements, improvements to the street scene, enhanced local habitats improving biodiversity, increased physical and mental wellbeing of local residents.
The aim of the work around the schools, was not only the manage the discharge rates from the schools which are in the immediate areas of flooding, but to drive engagement within the project. The aim was to get the children, teachers and parents asking questions as to why we are doing it, how it works etc. The increased awareness of flood risk locally helps to also improve flood resilience as people are more likely to be prepared. It was also hoped that some of the local residents will see what simple solutions can be implemented, to reduce surface water runoff, and look to create their own flower beds, veg patches in their own back gardens, and by using water butts or other features, help with the disconnection of a larger area of impermeable area from entering the sewer network.
As part of the wider project, we are working with Hull University to help quantify the performance characteristics of a range of SuDS features we create. This will help inform future projects throughout the borough. The long-term aspiration for the SuDS locally is for them not just to be seen as a drainage / flood risk management feature to become ‘business as usual’ approach for highways i.e. whenever a road is due to be reconstructed in the future, rather than relying on traditional highway drainage, SuDS will be retrofit as a standard part of the works. If we can help demonstrate the wider benefits that SuDS bring, they should not solely be seen as drainage features, but to open up green corridors through the urban environment, providing cooling to our towns through shade and evapotranspiration, making our streets nice places to be to encourage healthier ways of travel.
Although the planters have only just been installed in the past couple of months, we are already seeing the impacts within some of the data being collected by Hull University. The data shows that the peak discharge rates from the schools have been reduced significantly already, and that even though each intervention is only small in isolation, taken as a whole series of features adds up to a larger impact.

Friendly, flexible, courteous staff, who were very helpful when I changed my mind about the size of planter and the plants themselves. We found there to be a good choice of good quality plants. It’s good to know that you are doing your bit to prevent local drainage systems being overwhelmed in heavy rain. We found once planted with trailing plants the planter blends in with the front garden. The planter almost looked after itself with just a little water needed in the driest weather. We are very happy to have taken part in the trial.

The feedback that I have heard is that these planters have really brightened up dull areas. The fact they are sustainable too is amazing! So much thought has gone in to this and we are just so proud to say that we have been given such an amazing thing. We would highly recommend any other schools applying for these if they come up again.
The team that fitted them were fantastic too, so polite and graceful. Hardly knew they were here and got it all done in one day!

Water Industry Award Winner for SuDS in Schools
We’re thrilled to have been awarded the Alliance or Partnership of the Year award at the Water Industry Awards for our partnership with the Department for Education.
SuDSPlanter® were a fantastic supplier to work with, working within our timescales, providing over 250 planters, soil and plants for installations at schools across the southeast. The planters do an amazing job helping to reduce flood risk for the schools and slow the flow of rainwater entering the sewer network.
