COMMERCIAL BUILDING CASE STUDY

SuDSPlanter® Enhancements for Surrey County Council Offices

Project Details

Sector: Commercial
Location:Woking, Surrey
Client:Surrey County Council
Date: March 2022

Situation

Surrey County Council sought to address flood risk and enhance climate resilience at their SCC offices in Woking. The Flood and Climate Resilience team identified a need to reduce downstream flood risk by managing roof water runoff and slowing its flow into surrounding sewer systems. Beyond flood mitigation, the project aimed to add recreational value and encourage employee engagement through innovative design and planting.

Task

Install SuDSPlanter® units to manage roof runoff and provide stormwater attenuation.

Incorporate recreational and aesthetic elements into the design, including seating, tables, and rain chains, to enhance usability and workplace well-being.

Ensure the design reflects Surrey County Council branding for a personalised touch.

Engage SCC employees in plant selection and maintenance to foster a sense of ownership and sustainability awareness.

Action

Bespoke Design and Features: Sudsplanter Ltd integrated the Surrey CC oak leaf logo into the planter frames and disconnection features, subtly incorporating council branding into the design.

Collaborative Planting Selection: SCC employees participated in selecting plant species, ensuring alignment with their aspirations for biodiversity and ease of maintenance.

Planting Day: SCC employees attended a planting session to install the greenery, fostering hands-on involvement and understanding of maintenance requirements.

Recreational Enhancements: Installed additional features such as seating, tables, rain chains, and dispersal trays, enhancing the overall workplace environment.

Result

Flood Risk Reduction: The SuDSPlanters® successfully managed stormwater runoff from the roof, slowing its flow into the sewer system and reducing the risk of flooding downstream.

Employee Engagement: SCC employees adopted the planters and actively participated in maintenance, creating ownership and fostering a culture of sustainability within the workplace.

Workplace Well-being: The planters provided a green, accessible space for relaxation, with features such as seating contributing to improved employee well-being.

Biodiversity Gains: Carefully selected low-maintenance plants enhanced local biodiversity and visual appeal.

This project exemplified how functional design could integrate flood mitigation with employee engagement and aesthetic improvements, benefiting both the environment and workplace culture.
