COMMERCIAL BUILDING CASE STUDY

Solar Panel Carport at Innovation House

Project Details

Sector: Commercial
Location: Caldicot, Monmouthshire
Date: April 2022

Situation

Innovation House in Caldicot undertook a project to construct a solar panel carport within the existing office development premises. As part of this initiative, there was a need to address surface water runoff management while ensuring compliance with Monmouthshire County Council’s SuDS Approval Body (SAB) requirements.

Task

The objective was to implement a sustainable drainage system that would effectively capture, treat, and attenuate runoff from the solar panel carport before its discharge into the existing porous block paving surface in the office car park. The solution also needed to contribute additional environmental benefits such as enhancing biodiversity and air quality.

Action

To meet these requirements, two SuDSPlanter® units were integrated into the design. These units were strategically placed to collect runoff, providing both treatment to remove pollutants and attenuation to slow water flow. The treated water was then safely discharged into the porous block paving, preserving the functionality of the car park’s existing drainage system.

Result

The SuDSPlanter® units successfully satisfied SAB requirements for surface water treatment and attenuation. Additionally, the inclusion of these units enhanced the site’s biodiversity and contributed to air quality improvements, aligning with environmental sustainability goals. This dual functionality supported both regulatory compliance and the client’s broader commitment to environmentally responsible development.

Surrey County Council

The Flood and Climate Resilience team identified a need to reduce downstream flood risk by managing roof water runoff and slowing its flow into surrounding sewer systems. Beyond flood mitigation, the project aimed to add recreational value and encourage employee engagement through innovative design and planting.
