Housing Association Extension
Project Details
Sector: Residential
Location: Mountfield, Deeside
Date: November 2020
Situation
- Urban areas often experience surface water issues that overwhelm existing sewer systems, creating capacity challenges.
- A housing association commissioned a new extension to a residential property, further increasing the volume of surface water runoff.
- The local Water Company required measures to attenuate roof drainage from the existing property and the new extension to reduce pressure on the sewer system and prevent downstream flooding. This stipulation was also included in the planning consent.
Task
- Design and implement a sustainable drainage solution to manage the increased surface water runoff caused by the new extension.
- Address the existing drainage system’s capacity issues and ensure compliance with the Water Company’s requirements and planning conditions.
- Deliver a solution that would meet the satisfaction of the housing association and the property’s residents.
Action
SuDSPlanter® Installations:
- SuDSPlanter® 1: Installed on the wall of the new extension in a constrained space between the building and a low-level retaining wall.
- SuDSPlanter® 2: Positioned against the rear wall of the original building, with runoff discharging into an existing gully.
Roof Drainage Management:
- Both planters were connected to the drainage system to capture and attenuate surface water before it entered the overstressed sewer network.
- The installations ensured that both the extension’s roof runoff and the original building’s drainage complied with capacity limitations.
Delivery and Installation:
- Sudsplanter Ltd delivered and installed both units seamlessly, ensuring minimal disruption to the residents.
Result
- Flood Risk Reduction: The SuDSPlanters® attenuated surface water runoff, reducing pressure on the sewer system and mitigating the risk of downstream flooding.
- Capacity Improvement: By managing the drainage from the extension and existing roof, the project created additional capacity for sewer discharges.
- Client and Resident Satisfaction: Both the housing association and the residents were pleased with the quality and performance of the installation.
- Compliance Achieved: The solution met the Water Company’s stipulations and satisfied planning consent conditions.
Summary
This project demonstrates how SuDSPlanter® solutions provide an effective and space-efficient way to manage urban surface water issues. By addressing drainage challenges at Mountfield Road, the installation not only resolved local sewer capacity problems but also contributed to compliance with regulatory requirements, delivering a successful outcome for all stakeholders.
