Abergavenny Police Station Sustainable Drainage System
Project Details
Sector: Community
Location: Wales
Date: December 2023
Situation
- The new Abergavenny Police Station was constructed to replace the previous location in the town centre.
- As part of the SuDS Approval Body (SAB) planning requirements, the site needed a drainage solution that effectively managed roof runoff while incorporating environmental benefits.
- Additional project goals included improving the site’s biodiversity and air quality.
Task
- Develop and integrate a drainage solution that met SAB requirements by treating and attenuating roof runoff.
- Ensure compliance with environmental standards while enhancing biodiversity and improving air quality.
- Incorporate sustainable design elements for pedestrian and vehicle areas, such as permeable surfaces and green infrastructure.
Action
SuDSPlanter® Installations:
- Two SuDSPlanter® units were installed to manage roof runoff, treating and attenuating water before it entered the drainage system.
- The units were strategically placed to maximise efficiency and environmental benefits.
Complementary Infrastructure:
- Porous block paving was utilised for pedestrian areas and car parking spaces, reducing surface water runoff and facilitating natural infiltration.
- Two raingarden areas were incorporated to further enhance the site’s biodiversity and air quality. These provided habitats for pollinators and other wildlife while supporting natural water filtration.
Integration with Planning Requirements:
- The design was tailored to fulfil SAB approval criteria, ensuring a sustainable, compliant solution.
Result
- Flood Mitigation: The SuDSPlanter® units and porous paving reduced surface water runoff, preventing potential drainage issues.
- Environmental Impact: The raingardens and planters improved air quality and biodiversity, supporting native flora and fauna.
- Compliance Achieved: The project met all SAB planning and approval requirements, contributing to sustainable urban development.
- Aesthetic and Functional Value: The combined use of SuDSPlanters®, porous paving, and raingardens created an attractive, environmentally friendly site for both staff and visitors.
Summary
The Abergavenny Police Station project demonstrates how sustainable drainage solutions can seamlessly address regulatory requirements while delivering significant environmental and community benefits. The integration of SuDSPlanter® units, porous paving, and raingardens provided a practical yet eco-conscious approach to urban development.
