Situation
On the site of former Ruby’s bar and grill in Cwmbran, a 19-bed supported housing scheme was constructed. The project, a collaborative effort between a community housing association and the local authority, featured 13 short-stay homes and six long-term tenancy homes.
Due to the constrained nature of the site, innovative and efficient sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) were necessary to manage surface water while maximising the space available for housing and pedestrian access.
Task
- Address surface water management challenges posed by the compact site.
- Incorporate SuDS features to comply with regulations and provide environmental and well-being benefits.
- Optimise the use of the available space to enhance the liveability of the site without compromising on functionality.
Action
SuDS Features:
- A green roof was installed on the central flat roof to absorb rainfall and enhance biodiversity.
- Eight SuDSPlanter® units were strategically positioned around the building to capture runoff from both the pitched and green roofs.
- Rainwater from the SuDSPlanter® units was directed into a rainwater harvesting system, which discharged into a compact underground attenuation tank.
- The system ensured that surface water entered the existing drainage system at a controlled maximum rate of 5l/s, reducing flood risk.
Optimising Green Infrastructure: Despite the site’s limited footprint, the inclusion of the green roof and planters introduced significant greenery, contributing to biodiversity and air quality improvements.
Resident-Focused Design: Walkways and ramps provided accessibility while integrating well with the SuDS features. The green infrastructure created a visually appealing and calming environment for residents.

- Flood Risk Mitigation: The innovative drainage system successfully reduced the risk of flooding by controlling the discharge rate and enhancing water attenuation.
